Protecting Your Domain Name is Critical for Small Business Owners

Selecting and protecting the right website domain name could be make or break for many small businesses looking to hold onto their intellectual property.

Angela Freeman, a partner with Barnes & Thornburg, says business owners need to view domain names and websites as an important part of their assets and intellectual property. She says that, outside of just purchasing a domain name similar to your business’s name, you should also purchase web domain names that are misspellings of your company name, as well as the .com, .net, and .org versions of the same domain name.

Freeman says third parties could easily purchase your preferred domain name before you get the chance, and they will then try to sell or license the domain back to you.

Additionally, Freeman encourages small business owners to be proactive when renewing their domain names. She suggests either setting up an automatic renewal or placing the renewal date on your calendar so you don’t lose the domain when it expires.
