Clarifying Sedo’s fee for transaction confidentiality

Magnifying glass and chart

Most transactions can be kept confidential without paying a fee.

Sedo provides a great service to the domain name community by publishing weekly lists of domain sales over $2,000. This data is helpful for understanding domain sales trends and the current state of the domain market. It is the basis for Domain Name Wire’s weekly end user sales lists.

The company provides a way to opt out of having sales published in its lists. Until recently, I had misunderstood the process for requesting non-publication and believed it cost money to do so.

While Sedo does charge a 2.5% fee for requesting confidentiality, this applies only to brokerage transactions handled by Sedo’s brokers. It does not apply to standard marketplace transactions and the external transfer service.

To request confidentiality for one of these transactions, the buyer or seller can request it through the transfer center, and there is no additional fee.

Of course, either party could make the sale public themselves, but this prevents it from showing up in Sedo’s weekly list.

Additionally, confidentiality is not an option for auctions because they are public.
