Public Interest Registry (PIR), the nonprofit behind .org domain names, today opened nominations and applications for its Advisory Council.

The organization states that the council “helps PIR in its mission to create more and stronger mission-driven organizations and provides input and recommendations on issues affecting the broader .ORG Community, including noncommercial Internet users, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations.”

The Advisory Council is separate from the organization’s Board of Directors.

It’s a one-to-three-year unpaid position, although members are funded for one trip to PIR’s headquarters in Virginia for one of four annual meetings.

The current list of Advisory Council members represents a diverse group of individuals. Most work for or have connections to the nonprofit world, while many have domain name experience, particularly with country code domains. One is an employee of brand protection registrar MarkMonitor.
