Go wild! Analyzing animal domain names

Nearly half of animal names are in use, analysis shows.

Animal names can make good brand names, and many large brands have adopted them: Hippo.com, Zebra.com, and Bird.com come to mind. Popular animal names have also been the subject of cybersquatting disputes.

Now, someone has quantified the usage of these names.

Philip Schilling, who owns the domain piranhas.com, analyzed dictionary domains for animals, countries, fruits, and vegetables.

You can see a full list of what he found here, but some highlights of the 230 animal names he researched include:

  • Nearly half resolve to a business or organization website
  • 27% resolve to a for-sale lander
  • The oldest animal domains include octopus.com (1986), toad.com (1987), and rabbit.com (1990)
  • Only five of the domains have been registered in 2010 or later

Schilling also found that, if you want to buy a plural animal name, there are many available for under $50,000. Singular domains, which are more common for brands, will set you back a lot more money.
