Squarespace and Wix start sending expired domains to GoDaddy Auctions

Two large site builder platforms are now auctioning their expired domain inventory at GoDaddy.

GoDaddy Auctions recently picked up expired domain inventory from two large website builder companies, Squarespace and Wix (NASDAQ: WIX).

Squarespace is the bigger prize of the two. The company took over Google Domains in September 2023 and is now the 5th largest domain name registrar in terms of .com domains under management. As of March, it had over 8 million .com domains.

The registrar has a combination of domains registered through Google Domains as well as those registered by customers who created websites with the Squarespace.

While Google was unlikely to direct-auction its expired domains, it’s not surprising that Squarespace is adding this monetization option, especially now that private equity investors own the company.

Wix is also a top registrar with around 3 million .com domains under management. Nearly all of the domains expiring there were registered by people planning to create websites.

Before sending their expired domain inventory to GoDaddy Auctions, the only way to capture expiring domains from these registrars was to wait for them to go through pending delete.
