ICANN eats its own dog food with Universal Acceptance

Globe with email address and multiple top level domains

The organization takes another step to enable all domains to work with its systems.

More than a year after ICANN staff gained the ability to send and receive emails from internationalized domain names (IDN), the organization has taken another step on the Universal Acceptance path.

The non-profit domain overseer announced this week that individuals with IDN email addresses can now use them with their ICANN Account. ICANN Account is ICANN’s portal for individuals and organizations to interact with ICANN services and applications.

The fact that it took ICANN until last year to get its email system to work with IDNs, and another 18 months to enable them on the ICANN Account, highlights the challenge of Universal Acceptance (UA).

Universal Acceptance means that all valid domains and email addresses are compatible with all software applications. They should auto-link on social media, be accepted for account registrations, and be as easy to use for email as other domains.

There’s some progress, but it’s still a challenge, even for ASCII top level domains.
